Mayumi and Erika

I feel like it is another day where I start out with nothing to say. Somehow, when I start writing, the words start to flow. I have notes, pictures and some idea where I am going.

Beth and I went to the Ferry Building twice today. First for coffee and a cheese wheel from Acme Bread in the morning.

It was farmers market day. I got some cherries. It is that time of the year when the cherries are ripe and delicious. I ate them non-stop when we got home. I blew through a pound. Addicting.

Later, we went with Fergus Sullivan for lunch at the FB. Fish tacos.

This time I bought two pounds of cherries.

Stopped by my P.O. Box and picked up a check. Deposited it at the bank. Midweek, mid afternoon, the financial district was deserted. No workers, no traffic.

Dinner with Mayumi and Erika in Alameda. Mayumi is a retired techie; Erika a retired scientist. Mayumi and I met about ten years ago in an exercise program at Club One in Oakland - PMAX. It was an intense three day a week class involving stretching, yoga, spinning and rowing. We did that regularly for years. PMAX ended a few years ago and we all moved to Crufit in Montclair.

Additionally, we road biked a lot together which included some travel. Lots of rides in the Bay Area and rides as distant as Death Valley and Maui. Erika is Mayumi's wife and fellow adventurer. In terms of actual riding, I have probably spent more time directly ahead of or behind Erika. Erika and I had a memorable climb up Haleakala together last year for my 60th birthday.

I still remember my first ride with Mayumi. I am sure Erika was there, but I did not know her yet. We climbed Mt. Diablo with a group from PMAX. I remember staying with Mayumi for as long as I could and then her leaving me in the dust.

Second ride with Mayumi - I still had not learned. Again I tried to keep up with her on a hot day, climbing the Guysers in Healdsburg. I bonked and barely made it to the end of the ride. I was the last rider to finish.

So, Mayumi and Erika invited us for dinner on their houseboat in Alameda. We were excited to see their house and their new Sprinter adventure van. More about their adventures later. They prepared an extravagant meal: grilled Bulgogi, hand rolled Futomaki, Kubocha Squash, Oshitashi, Burdock root salad and more. A delicious feast.

Their houseboat, although small in square feet, was very zen, organized, comfortable and homey.

Mayumi and Erika are adventurers. Most recently, they were on an organized, several month long, bike ride in Africa. They started in Egypt and rode South. Mayumi is a blogger. You can read about their adventures at Mountains R Calling. They had to abandon the Africa trip partway through in March or April, because of Covid. Mayumi and Erika have ridden throughout the United States and the world.

Home away from home
This is their new customized Sprinter van. I am envious. Beautifully and comfortably equipped for adventure travel. Plenty of room for bikes and equipment.

We had a great time and dinner. Discussed travel, food and the scary times we are living in. Uh oh - past 7 p.m.

Beth and I hightailed it back to Inverness to avoid the craziness and curfew in the city. Hasta MaƱana.
