18 Miles Out

I got up at five a.m. to go fishing with Greg Goddard. He called last night and invited me salmon fishing on his boat. Beth gave me a little stink eye when I brought it up; but, she relented. I had to get up early to drop by my boat to get my rod, reel and tackle. I met Greg and his friend Mickey at seven a.m. I was a little late because there was traffic on the bay bridge. I did not expect it. Things are returning to normal (in a bad way). We headed out the golden gate into a pretty good swell. It was a solid 5 foot swell all day, with a few bigger. Greg had good info re where the fish were biting - 18 miles out! It took us over an hour to get there. South west of the gate. Surprisingly, there were a lot of boats out there fishing. My guess is that there were 30 or so boats. The Lead Pile

Too tired to blog yesterday after fishing. I came home, ate dinner and started watching Hamilton. I lasted about 26 minutes and went to bed. Back to yesterday's fishing trip. It was disappointing in many ways. I did not have my usual fishing mojo - my usual confidence. I really wanted to fish for salmon in the ocean. The ocean was too rough. The previous two days fishing reports were VERY good for halibut and striped bass inside San Francisco Bay. So, there was hope for a good day of fishing there. The crew was right: Greg, Earl and Roe. Earl and Roe met me at the boat. Easy set up and we headed to fisherman's wharf for bait. I expected a long line of boats and found hardly any.  We left the bait receiver at 7:00 a.m. and picked up Greg at Gashouse Cove.  There were a bunch of boats, including several party boats, off Chrissy Field (just inside the Golden Gate Bridge). Coast Trail

Saturday. Beth and I did our customary garden tour and maintenance in the morning. It is good for the garden when we look at every plant daily. My mole traps are idle. Since I set them, the moles have kept a  low profile. We hiked five miles in the Pt. Reyes National Seashore. A beautiful loop beginning near the Youth Hostel down the Coast Trail to Limantour Beach; and back up to the Youth Hostel.  Late afternoon, we drove to San Francisco for the night. Fishing again tomorrow. Years from now, when someone asks how I survived Covid 19, I'll tell them, I escaped by fishing as much as possible. Beth and I had a delicious takeout Italian dinner from the Ideale Restaurant in North Beach, courtesy of our friend David Zalob. David usually invites a large group for lunch at Ideale to celebrate his birthday. He turned 73 this year.
