Petaluma Opens for Business

Yikes, I almost forgot to write this blog today. Interesting day. After the garden inspection, I watered all the veggies and everything not on the watering system. Beth wanted to go to Petaluma for lunch. 

 We got our favorite lunch from the Lunchette: a kimchi bowl with grains, kimchi, salads, mushrooms, etc. Almost like a bowl of banchan. 

After eating our lunch on the lawn in front of the Petaluma Public Library, we walked around downtown. To our surprise, all the shops were open. Every store had a BLM signToday was the first day. We browsed a bunch of stores and antique stores. Masks on. Physically distant. It felt great. It felt almost normal. The shopkeepers seemed happy.

 We drove back to Inverness. I packed up and headed to SF. Stopped at the tackle store for a few items. Fishing with Greg Goddard tomorrow. 

 Had a nice phone call with Peg. She is busy working on a union election campaign for SEIU in LA. Good to talk to her. It is getting late and I need to get up early.

Another epic fishing day. I had the alarm set for 5:20 a.m. Meeting Earl at the boat at 5:45. I woke up at 4 and could not get back to sleep. No problem - I did the NYT spelling bee. Got out of the house and got to the boat early at Treasure Island. Got things set up and started the engines. Earl arrived and we quickly shoved off. Motored across the bay to fisherman's wharf to get live bait. We were not alone. There was a line of about 20 boats all the way out of the cove into the bay, waiting to get bait. We slowly eased our way to the bait receiver and got our two netfuls of live anchovies which they call a "half scoop", poured gently into our live bait tank. Decision time: where should we fish. There were at least 25 boats fishing all around Alcatraz. I often avoid the popular crowded spots unless I know for sure that the fish are biting there. Coast Trail

Saturday. Beth and I did our customary garden tour and maintenance in the morning. It is good for the garden when we look at every plant daily. My mole traps are idle. Since I set them, the moles have kept a  low profile. We hiked five miles in the Pt. Reyes National Seashore. A beautiful loop beginning near the Youth Hostel down the Coast Trail to Limantour Beach; and back up to the Youth Hostel.  Late afternoon, we drove to San Francisco for the night. Fishing again tomorrow. Years from now, when someone asks how I survived Covid 19, I'll tell them, I escaped by fishing as much as possible. Beth and I had a delicious takeout Italian dinner from the Ideale Restaurant in North Beach, courtesy of our friend David Zalob. David usually invites a large group for lunch at Ideale to celebrate his birthday. He turned 73 this year. Greg Goddard

Yesterday's blog today. I got home from a long day of fishing yesterday - exhausted. It all started at 5:45 a.m.   I had slept pretty well. I expected to take the boat out into the ocean which is still a bit scary. I knew that Greg Goddard would join me, bringing years of experience and wisdom. I was less afraid. The alarm woke me up. I had everything prepared the night before. Simple to pack up and go. Easy drive to Treasure Island - less than ten minutes door to gate. I got there early as always to get things set up. I hate trying to remember everything (switches, lines, rods, reels, bait tank, warm up engines, etc.) and do all the prep while everyone is ready to depart. Everything went smoothly. I put on the  downriggers for salmon fishing.  Greg showed up at 7 a.m. We quickly untied the mooring lines and embarked on our journey.
